Nursery admission age for 2027-28 in Pune

In short: for Nursery in 2027-28, your child needs 3 years completed on 30 June 2027, so a birth date on or before 30 June 2024. Maharashtra's School Education Department set this in a Government Resolution dated 15 October 2026. Here is what it means for Playgroup to Senior KG at Jigyaasa in Wakad, Baner and Ravet.

The new rule in plain words

The Government Resolution (no. RTE-2024/139 (E-1446124)/SD-1) sets one minimum age for each pre-primary class and for Class 1, and brings them in one year at a time.

  • Age is counted on 30 June of the year your child starts. A child who turns 3 on or before 30 June 2027 has completed 3 years for 2027-28.
  • Nursery (Balvatika-1): 3 years from 2027-28.
  • Junior KG (Balvatika-2): 4 years from 2028-29.
  • Senior KG (Balvatika-3): 5 years from 2029-30.
  • Class 1: 6 years from 2030-31.
  • Up to 15 days of relaxation may be given by the head of the school. It is not automatic.
  • Children already enrolled from Nursery to Class 1 in 2026-27 are not covered, and a child who passed the previous class at a recognised school is exempt when moving up.

Playgroup is outside the Government Resolution. At Jigyaasa, Playgroup takes children who are 2 years old on 30 June of the admission year.

The Government Resolution minimums for Junior KG and Senior KG start in later years (2028-29 and 2029-30). Until then, Jigyaasa places children by its own age bands: Playgroup 2+, Nursery 3+, Junior KG 4+ and Senior KG 5+ on 30 June. The final decision on your child's class rests with the centre.

Questions parents ask about the 2027-28 age rule

What is the nursery admission age for 2027-28 in Maharashtra?
A child needs 3 years completed on 30 June 2027 to join Nursery (Balvatika-1) in 2027-28. That means a birth date on or before 30 June 2024. The rule comes from the School Education Department Government Resolution dated 15 October 2026.
My child was born in July 2024. Can they join Nursery in 2027-28?
Under the new rule, a child born on or after 1 July 2024 is under 3 on 30 June 2027, so the usual class for 2027-28 is Playgroup and Nursery follows in 2028-29. Heads of school may relax the age limit by up to 15 days, but this is not automatic. Talk to your Jigyaasa centre: the final decision rests with the centre.
Does the new age rule apply to Playgroup?
No. The Government Resolution sets minimum ages for Nursery, Junior KG, Senior KG and Class 1. Playgroup sits outside it. At Jigyaasa, Playgroup takes children who are 2 years old on 30 June of the admission year.
When do the age rules for Junior KG, Senior KG and Class 1 start?
The rules come in one class at a time: Junior KG (Balvatika-2) needs 4 years from 2028-29, Senior KG (Balvatika-3) needs 5 years from 2029-30, and Class 1 needs 6 years from 2030-31, always counted as on 30 June. For 2027-28, Jigyaasa places children in Junior KG at 4 to 5 years and Senior KG at 5 to 6 years.
My child is already in Nursery or KG in 2026-27. Will they be held back?
The new criteria do not apply to children already enrolled from Nursery to Class 1 in 2026-27. A child who has passed the previous class at a recognised school is also exempt when moving to the next class. If your child is in Playgroup now, talk to the centre about the move to Nursery.
What does the 15-day relaxation mean?
The Government Resolution lets the head of a school relax the minimum age by up to 15 days. For Nursery in 2027-28, that could cover a child born in the first half of July 2024. It is a decision for the school, not an automatic right, so ask your centre at the visit.
My child is under 2. What can they join?
Children under 2 are too young for Playgroup, but Jigyaasa daycare takes children from 6 months at all three centres, Wakad, Baner and Ravet. Ask your centre about moving from daycare into Playgroup once your child turns 2.
